A few municipalities in Switzerland have announced the implementation of a fee for the disposal and recycling of paper and carton. The initiative follows an increase in volumes and quantities of recyclable materials to be taken care of by waste collection and treatment organizations, which professionals explain for example by the growth of online shopping and related packaging on the one hand, and by the refusal in 2018 of some Asian countries like China to manage wste coming from Europe on the other hand.
Local political representatives are now asking Zug City Council to provide more information, whether such a fee will also be applied to the canton's recycling activities in the future. They fear that extra charges will push people to throw recyclable materials into the regular garbage (aka the blue bags) in order to avoid paying extra fees.
